I did some research, and I attempted a mini birthday cake for Polar’s (my mastiff) 10th birthday! Woohoo!! I love my little old lady ❤️. This cake has simple ingredients that I know your four legged friends will love.
Friends.. there are no almond, no chocolate, no grape/raisin, and no xylitol ingredients! I tried to use all organic or natural ingredients when I could find them. Also, this is Polar’s first cake – so don’t worry that this is always how she eats.
Cake ingredients
1 cup flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/8 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup natural peanut butter (with no Xylitol - it’s dangerous to dogs. Check ingredients!)
1/2 cup applesauce (plain, unsweetened
1/2 cup pure pumpkin puree (not canned pumpkin pie mix)
1 egg
Frosting ingredients
1 cup unsweetened Greek yogurt
1/2 cup smooth natural peanut butter (with no Xylitol)
2 tablespoons honey or pure maple syrup
Dog cake
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour two 5-inch or 6-inch round baking pans. Set aside.
In a large bowl, whisk flour and baking soda. Set aside.
In a separate bowl mix together vegetable oil, peanut butter, applesauce, honey and pumpkin puree. Once combined, mix in egg and mix until combined. I use a stand mixer.
Stir in dry ingredients until just incorporated.
Divide batter between two baking pans.
Bake for approximately 26-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean and the cake springs back when pressed lightly. All ovens are different so check occasionally (you can put your ear near the cake and if you hear crackling it'll need a 1-2 more minutes)
Cool in pan for 10 minutes then invert cakes onto a wire rack to cool completely.
After cooling, add frosting if desired.
Peanut butter yogurt frosting
In the bowl of a stand mixer (or using a hand mixer), beat together the yogurt, peanut butter and honey until fluffy and smooth.
Use an off-set spatula to frost the cakes.
Important note
If you have any question as to the safety of ingredients for your dog, please check with your veterinarian.
If you have a tough time with the frosting being watery - refridgerate it.
Dog cake recipe success!!
